Businessman and broad-caster Maxwell Thom has died from complications related to COVID-19.

The 53-year-old Thom who celebrated his birth-day on Monday was par-tially vaccinated having received his first dose on August 18 and had no known comorbidities according to his family.

He will be remembered mostly as the owner of the cell phone retailer Wireless Connections which has over the last 15 years offered mobile handsets and other electronics to the public. Most recently Thom was operator of the radio station 93.1 FM. He was also a broadcaster, hosting the morning show “Gospel Plane”.

According to his sister Nola Hohenkirk, he first complained about feeling unwell on September 7 repeatedly telling her that he was tired. On Friday she and his wife Shelly Thom, took him to the hospital where he tested positive before being transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital at Liliendaal.

Hohenkirk said her brother will be remember-ed for his commitment to his family especially his two young children.

“He was passionate about his family and loving. He loved his children,” she shared.

His mother, Sister Lynette Thom described her first born as a loving person.

“He loved all and he too was loved. I pray this afternoon that God will give us strength and I give thanks and praise that his soul will rest in peace. He is no longer a part of this earth plane. His work on earth is finished in Jesus name,” she pronounced.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister, Kwame McCoy described Thom as a true son of the soil.

“Athlete, dancer, businessman, broadcaster and philanthropist, Maxwell has certainly made a positive impact on the Guyanese society. To lose someone with such zest, zeal and love for country to the dreaded Corona Virus reinforces the fact that COVID-19 is real and that it must be taken seriously. The death of a loved one is a painful experience and Maxwell Thom was undoubtedly loved by many,” the Minister said in a statement.
