Rockey Miguel, the farmer who police said admitted to killing his father at a backdam at Great Troolie Island a week ago, was on Monday charged with the murder and remanded to prison.
Miguel, 26, of 58 Lil Red Village, Onderneeming Sand Pit, Essequibo Coast, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, where the charge was read.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and the matter was adjourned until November 24, 2021, for report.
The deceased, Archaelus Anthony Miguel, a 59-year-old labourer, also of Onderneeming, was killed on September 6 at a backdam at Great Troolie Island, in Region Three.
According to the Guyana Police Force, Rockey, admitted to residents and police that he chopped his father to death because his father was “troubling” him as they were working at a farm.
The police further said that Rockey took police detectives into the dense forest and showed them the spot where he chopped his father and later dragged his body and hid it under some branches.
The father’s body was discovered with multiple chop wounds to his face and body. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and doctors pronounced him dead.
Meanwhile, information reaching Stabroek News revealed that Rockey and his father left Onderneeming to work on a woman’s farm at Great Troolie Island.
The police had said the son returned home alone, claiming that he was not feeling well. When asked by a resident about his father, the son said he left him in the backdam. Checks were then made which led to the discovery of the pants and a cell phone of the deceased. The son then reportedly confessed his actions to fellow villagers.
A post-mortem examination conducted on the deceased revealed that he suffered 24 chop wounds and further gave his cause of death as multiple incised wounds.
