The Guyana Police Force yesterday disclosed that two suspects have been arrested for the murder of Shawn Albert, a pastry vendor.
According to a police release yesterday, the suspects, one of whom is known to the police, were apprehended following information provided by an informant. The release said that the informant contacted two subordinate officers at the Anna Regina Police Station and related to them that he had information as to the location of two suspects who were involved in the murder of 39-year-old Albert aka ‘Dexter/Rastaman’- a popular pastry vendor attached to Lin’s Bakery.
The police yesterday stated that on the basis of this new information, the commander of Region Two instructed that an operation be launched in order to apprehend the two suspects. Police ranks attended the location at about 2:00 hrs on Wednesday and the two men were arrested. One of the men is known to the police as he had been previously charged with robbery. The men were questioned and they denied being involved in the robbery. They also gave separate accounts of their location at the time of Albert’s death.
Investigators are currently examining the alibis provided by the suspects.
Albert was shot on August 30, around 18:43 hours at Onderneeming Sandpit, Region Two. The father of one hailed from Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara. He was a driver/salesman attached to Lin’s Bakery located on South Road, Georgetown. On the day in question he was selling pastries along with salesman Decklon Lee in the village when they were attacked by two masked men. As soon as they entered their mini bus GWW 1783, the masked men who were armed with a gun, stopped them and demanded cash. It is reported that Albert put up a fight with the armed bandits.
The bandits then opened fire as the now-deceased was attempting drive away, causing him to lose control and crash into a nearby fence. The men made good their escape with $70,000. Residents upon hearing the noise immediately rushed to the scene where they found Albert lying helpless.
The police were immediately summoned. Albert was taken to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Lee, the other salesman was not injured during the robbery.
