A man who was previously charged with the attempted murder of his wife has now been charged and remanded for murder.
Ganeshwar Sheocharran also known as ‘Ganesh’ of Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant, Berbice, yesterday appeared virtually before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the George-town Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with the murder of Sandrama Roma Raju, 29. He was remanded until October 14, while the matter was transferred to the Whim Magistrate’s Court for statements.
Sheocharran, a hire car driver, was previously charged with the attempted murder of Raju, his wife of six years with whom he shares a four-year-old daughter. Raju was a patient at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital after being burned during the wee hours of September 13. She is said to have sustained burns to 98% of her body.
This newspaper previously reported that the couple was engaged in a heated argument that started just around 9 pm the night before the incident occurred. She had threatened to separate from Sheocharran and after the man would not allow her to leave, she allegedly doused herself with kerosene oil and he allegedly set her on fire.
Sheocharran then fled the scene and went into hiding after which he made attempts to flee to New York, USA where his parents reside. However he was arrested after the Guy-ana Police Force received information that the man was on board a flight to New York, prompting them to immediately reach out to the immigration authorities at John F. Kennedy Inter-national Airport. This resulted in the immigration authorities at JFK detaining Sheocharran and placing him on a flight back to Guyana, where he was immediately arrested upon his return.
