A water vendor accused of two armed robberies was yesterday granted bail after telling a city magistrate that he was brutalised by the police.
Shamar Davis, 21, of Guyhoc Squatting Area, was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where Magistrate Dylon Bess read the charges to him.
It is alleged that on May 10, at Croal Street, Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, he robbed Stephan Muniram of a cell phone valued at $125,000. It was also alleged that on September 24, at Water Street, Georgetown, while in the company of others and being armed with a knife, he robbed Rohan Persaud of a cellphone valued at $50,000, and another cell phone valued at $12,000.
Davis denied both charges and told the court that he was arrested on Friday last after being beaten by police officers. He said that he was first told by a policeman that he was wanted at the police station. He said that as he was making his way to the station he was ambushed by another policeman, who then told him of another allegation and beat him up.
Davis, who noted that he sells water and drinks at the Route 48 bus park, claimed that he had no knowledge of the allegations the police have brought against him.
After listening to Davis, the Magistrate released him on $150,000 bail for each charge. He told Davis that the offences are serious and instructed him to return to court on October 4.
