(Trinidad Guardian) Preparations for prayers turned into tragedy after a 34-year-old father of one was gunned down while picking flowers yesterday.
Devindra Narinesingh, a mechanical technician, had an ongoing dispute with a resident over land which ended in his death, Guardian Media was told.
A relative, who wished to remain anonymous, said that around 9 am Narinesingh was at his Iere Village home with his wife, mother and a pundit preparing for prayers for Pitri Paksh.
This is an auspicious occasion on the Hindu calendar when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors.
The relative said Narinesingh walked to the back of the house to pick flowers for the prayers.
Shortly after, he said, three loud explosions rang out.
Narinesingh’s wife and mother ran to the back where they found him bleeding from a gunshot wound.
They took him to the Princes Town District Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The relative said Narinesingh had several verbal clashes with the alleged suspect and made several reports at the Princes Town Police Station.
However, he said the suspect was warned by the police but never arrested.
As a result of the ongoing dispute, he said Narinesingh had installed cameras around his house.
The family has handed over footage of the incident to the police.
Narinesingh was the father of a three-year-old girl and recently got promoted to the position of acting team leader at the National Gas Company.
Up to last evening, the suspect was still on the run. Investigators of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are investigating.
