Councillors of Region Two are calling for a total revamp of the Regional Sports Department.
At the recent statutory meeting of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) for the month of September, councillors from the government and opposition said that they are clueless as to what is going on in the department.
The councillors further alleged that officers attached to the Department were underperforming. But Regional Executive Officer (REO), Susana Saywack, informed the council that officers within the department were recently engaged by her office and were advised to communicate all planned sports events to the RDC. This in turn led the officers to advise the REO that the department currently lacks sufficient resources to execute their work effectively.
Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva then informed the council that the Regional Administration intends to revamp the Department so that the officers can perform their functions effectively. The administration will be writing the Minister of Sports to look at ways to enhance the Department and De Silva said that it is paramount that youths continue to be involved in activities, even virtually, during the pandemic. Arnold Adams, a government councillor, reminded the council that there are many young people in Region Two who needed to be continuously engaged. Adams then suggested that indoor activities should be the primary focus especially during the pandemic.
Both the Chairperson and REO insisted that communication is important and officers from the department should have been communicating frequently with the other relevant regional authorities. Adams said that he was “clueless” as to what programmes/activities were being undertaken by the department. To address this gap De Silva implored that communication is needed and wherever the region can assist it will.
