Three youths ages 16, 17, and 21 were yesterday arrested by police following the robbery of a jewellery store. One of the suspects sustained a gunshot wound to the upper part of his right thigh.
A police release stated that about 12:15 pm, the suspects robbed Bharrat’s Jewellery Store on Robb Street, Georgetown of a cellphone valued $38,000 which was the property of a 30-year-old salesman and a small number of gold chains, finger rings and earrings (value unknown) belonging to the 48-year-old businessman.
Investigations revealed that yesterday at midday, the suspects entered the store while the salesman was inside. One of the suspects then pulled out a black handgun from the right side of his waist and pointed it at the victim instructing him not to say anything.
The gunman then took the salesman’s cellphone while one of the other two suspects who was armed with a hammer smashed a glass case in. The third suspect then proceeded to take jewellery from the case.
They then escaped and continued along south on Orange Walk where ranks on patrol who were informed gave chase. The suspects upon seeing the police took off in separate directions but they were apprehended between Orange Walk and Alexander Street.
The release stated that when the suspects were handed over to the police by a crowd, it was realised that one of them had been shot. However, police are claiming that they did not fire any shots.
The suspects were searched but none of the stolen articles were found in their possession.
Police then escorted the injured suspect to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he is receiving medical treatment under police guard.
The other two suspects are currently in custody.
