Cricket West Indies’ Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, has suggested the region could see the return of first-class cricket by January 2022.
The Director of Cricket made this disclosure while appearing on the Mason and Guest radio programme on Tuesday.
“We have recommended that we start four-day cricket in the last week in January, first week in February next year and I agree with you 100 percent… it is desperately time for us now to get four-day cricket playing in the region for more than one reason.”
Regional cricket was last played in March, 2020 when the tournament was reduced to eight rounds on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic hitting the region.
Barbados Pride were crowned champions, effectively breaking Guyana Jaguars’ winning streak that spanned the five seasons prior.
“At a minimum we want to play five rounds which is half of what we normally play but that’s a starting point,” said Adams.
“Ideally, I would like to get 10 rounds of first-class cricket in but starting with that, there is no two ways, we have to get it…” Adams added.
The Director of Cricket noted that this was just a starting point and there is expected to be minimal travel, pointing out that there is a need for players to be playing across different territories.
He suggested that it may be a case where three teams travel for three rounds before switching around for the second half of the tournament.
