A 29-year-old man died after suffering severe lacerations about his body yesterday afternoon after he reportedly walked into a running aircraft propeller at the Kamarang Airstrip, Region Seven.
Dead is Nigel Rodrigues, of Kamarang Landing, Upper Mazaruni.
Police yesterday confirmed that the incident took place around 3 pm.
According to police, at the time of the incident, Rodrigues, who was employed as a porter/cargo handler with Air Services Limited, was under the influence of alcohol.
Investigations revealed that Rodrigues was imbibing at the Kamarang Landing when the aircraft – a Caravan 8R GFA – which was piloted by a 55-year-old pilot landed at the airstrip. Before the pilot could have shut off the engine completely, Rodrigues apparently walked into the aircraft’s propeller.
Stabroek News was told that Rodrigues is a Venezuelan national who recently migrated here.
Reports are that Rodrigues was supposed to offload the aircraft’s cargo.
“It was so horrible… all of his organs was just out. There was too much blood,” a resident, who wished not to be named told this newspaper.
