As any good functioning organization would do, the Guyana Squash Association held trials to fill two vacant spots on the squash team to this year’s Junior Pan Am games in Cali, Colombia later this year.
The Guyana junior boys squash team has qualified for the Junior PanAm Games to be held from November 25th to December 5th 2021.
According to a press release from the GSA, playoffs to select the three-man team were held at the Georgetown Club Camp street in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Following strict COVID-19 guidelines, a small number of contenders battled for spots to represent Guyana at the upcoming games,” stated the release.
“Shomari Wiltshire, away at school, secured his spot with previous outstanding performance and his consistent reign at the head of the Junior team,” the release added.
As a result, Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, Nicholas Verwey, Michael Alphonso and Mohryan Baksh played a round robin competition to held the GSA arrive at the two available spots.
The round robin competition concluded Saturday morning and saw a clean sweep for Ince-Carvalhal who won all three of his matches to earn his place on the squad.
The other spot went to Alphonso who defeated Nicholas Verwey and Mohryan Baksh.
Verwey battled valiantly against Ince-Carvalhal and Alphonso, pushing both matches to five-setters while young Baksh rallied well with the older boys in his matches, the release stated.
