A man was found with nine pounds of cannabis in the trunk of his car after trying to evade a police roadblock at the Berbice River Bridge early yesterday morning.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said in a statement that the 34-year-old man was intercepted shortly after 04:15 hrs. The man was observed driving a dark blue 212-model car, bearing registration number HB-6999.
The police said after getting within a short distance of the roadblock, the vehicle suddenly turned and sped off at a fast rate of speed. The police chased behind the vehicle and was able to intercept it about 20 feet away from the roadblock.
A search was then conducted on the driver’s person and the vehicle and a bulky haversack was found in the car’s trunk.
The suspected illicit substance was in a black plastic bag which was contained in a bulky parcel wrapped with a transparent plastic hidden in the spare wheel compartment. The bag was opened in the suspect’s presence and contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be cannabis, the police said. The man was told of the offence, cautioned and arrested. According to the police, the man said “is me weed and I went going and sell off over the river but I turn back when I see the block”.
The suspected narcotics, the car and the man were escorted to Central Police Station, where the car was lodged and the suspected cannabis was weighed in the man’s presence. It amounted to four kilogrammes (nine pounds). The man gave a caution statement and is presently in custody assisting with the investigation, the police added.
