The police should let the public know what measures are in place to prevent rapes by its members

Dear Editor,

There is news that more police have been charged with rape – this time in Lethem. Recently there was a conviction of two other police men for raping a woman in the Turkeyen Police Station.  The late former Commissioner of Police Henry Greene in 2011/2012 faced allegations of rape. The charges were dropped. In the UK, a police officer has pleaded guilty to the murder of a woman he ‘arrested’ while one of his colleagues has now been charged with rape.

Guyana apparently has been taking guidance from the UK on police sector reform.  There are calls in the UK for their police force to do more serious assessment of the police officers. The Guyana Police Force has to let the public know what measures are in place to continuously assess and evaluate their officers so that they do not rape and abuse the citizens they are meant to protect. These are things which money and oil and gas will not fix and require strong political will for transformation.

Sincerely,

Vidyaratha Kissoon
