The contractors involved with the City Hall restoration project conducted a preliminary site visit earlier this month and works are expected to start in November.
This was disclosed during the Mayor and City Council’s statutory meeting on Monday where Town Clerk, Candace Nelson said that the company which secured the $780 million contract, had conducted the visit in mid-October.
During the discussion on the restoration project, Georgetown Mayor, Ubraj Narine, inquired whether a commencement date was given to the council. Fides Guyana Incorporated which has its parent company in Trinidad, in late September signed a contract with the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development to carry out the rehabilitation works.
During the meeting it was stated that the site visit reportedly occurred on October 14. City Engineer, Colvern Venture, told the council that given that the contract was signed with the local government ministry, it is that body that has to issue a commencement date for the project.
Venture noted that the site visit which the contractors would have done was for the contractors to be able to ascertain how they will approach the restoration works, observe whether they were satisfied with what was needed to be removed from the building along with accessibility to the property, among other reasons.
However, the town clerk said that the reported commencement date is expected to be early November. Just days after the contract was signed, preparations got underway to relocate various departments that are housed at City Hall in order to facilitate the commencement of works.
