A cyclist succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday after he was struck by a mini-bus along the Strangroen Public Road at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
According to a Guyana Police Force (GPF) statement, Seebaran Dhankumar, 47, of North Public Road, Mahaica, ECD, was struck by a minibus, BTT 3832, driven by Surujpaul Bissoon, 61, of Novar, Mahaicony, ECD, around 18:00 hrs on Tuesday.
The police said Bissoon was reportedly driving in an eastern direction along the road at a fast rate of speed when he alleges that Dhankumar, who was cycling in front of him on the northern side of the road, changed directions. He said that as a result the man suddenly ended up in his path.
The driver said he applied brakes to avoid a collision but despite his efforts he collided with the pedal cyclist. After the collision, Dhankumar was taken to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor.
