Mayor of the Town of Anna Regina Rajendra Prabhulall is calling on residents of the Region Two town to desist from dumping garbage in the waterways.

Prabhulall said he was very disappointed when he conducted an inspection during the flooding last week and found that residents were dumping their garbage and clogging up drains in various communities. He said that a mini-excavator had to be sent to Sparta and Lima to clear clogged drains and trenches.

The trenches were filled with household items and garbage that was dumped indiscriminately.

“The Anna Regina Town Council is calling on residents to co-operate and utilise the private garbage disposal to dispose of their garbage. If they dump garbage in the trench, then the structures will be clogged and it will eventually lead to flooding during the rainy season,” the Mayor said.

Prabhulall added that the sluice foot at Lima was clogged with garbage during the rainy season and the attendant had to spend hours cleaning it. He, therefore, said that the council will make regular inspections of the waterways throughout the township and anyone found in the act of dumping garbage will be prosecuted.
