Case files lost in the massive fire that destroyed the century-old Brickdam Police Station, in Georgetown, are currently being reconstructed, Commander of Region 4(A) Assistant Commissioner Simon McBean says.
In a brief telephone interview with this newspaper on Thursday, McBean explained that the force is collaborating with the court to reconstruct the files. He said as the court gives the dates for matters, officers work with records from the court to reproduce the files.
Asked if he can comment on the number of files already reconstructed, the Commander responded in the negative, explaining that he didn’t have the numbers on hand. He nonetheless noted that “quite an amount” had been completed.
Immediately after the fire, McBean had said “We have to do an assessment to say as to what files we would have lost. When that is done, based on the assessment [we will be able to say if] some can be reconstructed from within. We can have assistance from the court in doing so… but we need to have an assessment of what state court presentations were at, until we have that we won’t be able to really go forward.”
A devastating inferno earlier this month destroyed the police station as well as a large number of court documents. This has resulted in a backlog of cases waiting to be heard in the Magistrates’ Courts.
