Contrary to police report, aviator Chan-a-Sue stopped at intersection before collision

Surveillance footage of the accident that left veteran aviator Malcolm Chan-A-Sue and his wife hospitalised shows that he stopped at the Kingston intersection before the collision, contrary to what was reported by the police.

The accident occurred at the intersection of High and Barrack streets on Saturday afternoon and the footage seen by Stabroek News shows the collision occurred after Chang-A-Sue stopped on the western side of the intersection before attempting to proceed east to the other side of Barrack Street.

In a statement on Saturday, the Guyana Police Force had said that as the car approached the intersection with High Streets, where a “STOP” sign and a stop line have been placed to regulate the movement of traffic, Chan-a-Sue allegedly failed to stop and continued driving east to cross the intersection. As a result, it said, a minibus, which was proceeding north along the western driving lane of High Street, collided with the car.

From the video seen by Stabroek News, Chang-A-Sue, stopped for a few seconds then proceeded across the road at a slow speed.

The video showed that while the car was at the centre of the intersection, the minibus, BSS 8899, that was travelling north on High Street, approached at a fast rate and collided with Chang- A-Sue’s vehicle.

Due to the speed the bus was travelling at the time, there was an impactful collision.

The Guyana Police Force had said that after the Chan-a-Sues were struck, their vehicle then collided with another car.

In the aftermath, Malcolm, 82, and his wife Margaret, 84, were both admitted as patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Malcolm Chan-a-Sue is founder of the Art Williams and Harry Wendt Aeronautical Engineering School.
