With dozens of road fatalities continuing to be experienced each year, the Ministry of Public Works is collaborating with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) on a comprehensive review of existing laws and regulations.
This was disclosed yesterday by Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill at the launch of Road Safety Awareness Month 2021 at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, according to a release on the ministry’s Facebook page.
Edghill said: “Safety on Guyana’s roadways is a priority for the Ministry of Public Works, where I continue to work with my team to come up with initiatives, in the form of not only physical infrastructural works, but lend support to the softer side of road safety, in the form of Enforcement and Education. We are currently working with the Inter-American Development Bank to address a comprehensive review of the existing legislations and regulations that guides the use of our roadways, taking into consideration the risk factors, such as speeding, overloading, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, just to name a few”.
Edghill added that “it is time for Guyana to become a First World Country and in doing so we must shift gears, we must not allow lawlessness to continue on our Roadways”.
