A Venezuelan national was fatally stabbed just after midnight on Saturday during an argument as he was on his way home at Ruby Backdam, East Bank Essequibo.
The dead man has been identified as 24-year-old Tony Birza called “Bush.” The suspect, who has been identified remains at large.
Police in a report yesterday said that Birza and his brother were consuming alcohol at a shop in the village and at about 9.35pm, departed for home.
“Whilst heading home the now deceased stopped at a shed which is situated on the eastern end of the said road to speak to two …girls and in the process the suspect who is known to them, approached the victim and a heated argument ensued between them,” police said.
The confrontation, police said, escalated quickly. The suspect reached, it was reported, “into his pants waist, retrieved a long shiny object and dealt the victim one stab to his left abdomen. Immediately after the suspect fled on foot.
An alarm was raised by the victim’s brother which resulted in several persons in the area coming to their assistance. The first responders made checks for the suspect but their efforts were futile.
The police were later summoned and upon examination of the body, investigators found a single stab wound to the left side of his abdomen.
The body was escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where it was seen and examined by Dr. Tewari, who pronounced the victim dead on arrival.
The body is currently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
