NBA roundup: DeMar DeRozan, Bulls hand Jazz first loss of season

DeMar DeRozan led all scorers with 32 points, including a late game-clinching dunk, to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 107-99 home victory against the Utah Jazz on Saturday night.

The Jazz rallied to make it a game after falling behind by 17 points, but just didn’t have enough to overcome the Bulls in the final minute and sustained first loss of the season. Their 4-0 start had been Utah’s best since the 2006-07 season.

Zach LaVine scored 26, Nikola Vucevic contributed 16 points with 12 rebounds, and Lonzo Ball added 11 points as the Bulls rebounded from their first loss of the young season to win for the fifth time in six games.

Donovan Mitchell topped Utah with 30 points, including 22 in the first half although he shot just 3-for-15 in the second, and Rudy Gobert amassed 17 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Jazz. Jordan Clarkson chipped in with 16 points off the bench, while Bojan Bogdanovic added 14 points.

Wizards 115, Celtics 112 (2 OT)

Bradley Beal scored a game-high 36 points, Montrezl Harrell and Kyle Kuzma both recorded double-doubles, and Washington defeated visiting Boston in double-overtime to match its best start since the 2005-06 season.

Harrell scored 20 points and pulled down 14 rebounds. Kuzma grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds and scored three of his 17 points on a jumper from the corner with 2:19 left in regulation that broke a 96-96 tie.

Jaylen Brown scored a team-high 34 points, including four late in regulation to help force overtime, although Washington held him scoreless in the two extra sessions. Jayson Tatum added 27, though on 10-for-32 shooting, and grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds in Boston’s second loss to Washington in as many games.

Heat 129, Grizzlies 103

Jimmy Butler scored a game-high 27 points as tired and short-handed Miami still managed to defeat host Memphis.

Grizzlies superstar point guard Ja Morant, who entered the game averaging an NBA-best 30.4 points to go with 7.8 assists while shooting 40.6 percent on 3-pointers, was held to 20 points and seven assists. He made just one of his four 3-pointers. Butler made 8-of-12 shots from the floor and added seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. Miami also got 22 points off the bench from Tyler Herro and 15 points and a game-high eight assists from veteran point guard Kyle Lowry, who enjoyed his best game of the young season.

Pistons 110, Magic 103

Jerami Grant had 22 points and host Detroit overcame a spotty debut by Cade Cunningham to collect its first victory of the season at the expense of Orlando.

Cunningham, the top pick in the draft, missed the first four games with an ankle injury.

He played 19 minutes, mostly in the first half, and shot 1-for-8 from the field while scoring two points. He also had seven rebounds and two assists.

Kelly Olynyk contributed 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, while Josh Jackson tossed in 13 points with seven rebounds for Detroit. Saddiq Bey also had 13 points and seven rebounds. Franz Wagner, the eighth pick in this year’s draft, led Orlando with a season-high 19 points. Cole Anthony supplied 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Knicks 123, Pelicans 117

RJ Barrett scored a career-high 35 points to lead six New York scorers in double figures in beating short-handed host New Orleans.

Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker added 19 points each, Taj Gibson had 13 and Julius Randle and Alec Burks had 10 each as the Knicks won for the fifth time in six games.

New Orleans lost for the sixth time in seven games as Brandon Ingram (hip contusion) joined Zion Williamson (foot surgery) on the sideline. The Pelicans closed within three points early in the third quarter, but Barrett had five points and an assist during a 10-0 Knicks run.

76ers 122, Hawks 94

Tobias Harris had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lift host Philadelphia past Atlanta for its second win in a row.

Joel Embiid added 19 points, Tyrese Maxey contributed 16 and Seth Curry had 15 for the Sixers. Philadelphia played without Ben Simmons for the sixth straight game for personal reasons.

This was the first meeting since the Hawks defeated the Sixers in seven games in last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals. Cam Reddish paced the Hawks with 16 points, while Trae Young added 13 points and 10 assists. Clint Capela chipped in with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Raptors 97, Pacers 94

Rookie Scottie Barnes collected 21 points and 12 rebounds to lift Toronto over Indiana in Indianapolis.

Svi Mykhailiuk scored 16 points off the bench and Fred VanVleet also had 16 for the Raptors, who have won three in a row. VanVleet had 26 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in a 118-100 victory over the Pacers on Wednesday in Toronto.

Indiana’s Domantas Sabonis recorded 22 points and 14 rebounds. Justin Holiday had 16 points off the bench and Caris LeVert added 15 in the first half in his season debut after sitting out Indiana’s first six games while recovering from a stress fracture in his back.

Spurs 102, Bucks 93

Dejounte Murray scored 23 points — 16 of them in the fourth quarter — as San Antonio defeated host Milwaukee to snap a four-game losing streak and get its first road win of the season.

The Spurs led by two points heading into the fourth quarter and 92-85 after Keldon Johnson’s 3-pointer with 2:22 to play. Murray then hit a bucket and a 3-pointer, the final with 1:12 to play to put away Milwaukee. Derrick White added 17 points for San Antonio, with Bryn Forbes scoring 16.

Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 28 points and 13 rebounds, while Khris Middleton added 19 points. The Bucks played without Brook Lopez (back soreness), as well as Donte DiVincenzo (left ankle), Jrue Holiday (left ankle) and Bobby Portis Jr. (conditioning).

Warriors 103, Thunder 82

Stephen Curry rebounded from a lackluster first half with three 3-pointers in a two-minute flurry early in the third period, sending Golden State to a demolition of visiting Oklahoma City.

Curry finished with a game-high 20 points and Draymond Green chipped in with 14 as part of a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who beat the Thunder for the second time in five days.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a team-high 15 points for Oklahoma City, which was coming off a home win over the Los Angeles Lakers that came one night after a competitive 106-98 loss to Golden State on Tuesday.

Nuggets 93, Timberwolves 91

Nikola Jokic scored 26 points and pulled down 19 rebounds, and Denver rallied to defeat Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Monte Morris added 16 points and five assists for Denver, which earned its second win in as many nights. Michael Porter Jr. grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to go with seven points.

Malik Beasley scored 18 points on six 3-pointers off the bench to lead Minnesota. Anthony Edwards had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards, and Karl-Anthony Towns finished with 14 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Suns 101, Cavaliers 92

Devin Booker celebrated his 25th birthday with 27 points as host Phoenix overcame a slow start and never trailed in the second half to knock off Cleveland.

Deandre Ayton added 17 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 12 rebounds for the Suns, who avoided their third straight loss. Booker added nine assists. Chris Paul finished with 16 points, 10 assists and four steals.

Cedi Osman made six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting for Cleveland, which was playing the second game of a back-to-back after losing by 12 to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday. Lauri Markkanen, Darius Garland and Kevin Love tallied 11 points apiece for the Cavaliers.
