A Canefield, East Canje, Berbice businesswoman is now dead after she reportedly lost control of her motorcycle while navigating a turn at Airy Hall, at Mahaicony, on the East Coast of Demerara.
Petal Payne, 44, of Lot 77 East Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, was a single mother of four who owned and operated a cassareep business where she would make and bottle the product to be sold to numerous supermarkets and vendors in and around Berbice.
Payne was heading to a Halloween party at a fun park at Mahaicony around 4 pm on Sunday when the accident occurred.
She was riding motorcycle CJ 975 and police say she lost control of the vehicle while navigating a sharp turn.
Payne fell to the ground and reportedly suffered major head injuries.
She was picked up in a conscious state and rushed to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, which transferred her to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she succumbed just around 22:00 hrs on Sunday.
This newspaper was told that some of relatives, including her daughter and son-in-law, were also on other motorcycles heading to the same location at the time of the accident.
Payne is well known in her community and has been described as a very helpful and hardworking woman.
