Former Caribbean under-21 singles champion, Shemar Britton, is set to participate in the International Table Tennis Federation’s Ecuador Open from November 2-6, 2021.
The tournament, which is an ITTF world contender series, is scheduled for the Totoracocha Sports Complex Avenida Los Andes and Avenida del Condor Cuenca.
According to the Guyana Table Tennis Association, Britton departed Guyana Saturday for the United States before moving on to Ecuador.
Britton, also a former Caribbean Championships bronze medalist and singles under-21 silver medalist will be participating in the men’s singles with preliminary rounds beginning today.
The tournament will see over 24 men’s participants with players from Belgium, India Peru Puerto Rico, Austria and Mexico in action.
“This offers a great opportunity for Britton to have great match practice in assessing where his game is after over an 18 months hiatus from competition due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” the GTTA release stated.
“A budding lawyer who attends the University of the West Indies is one of the strongest talents emanating from the English-speaking Caribbean, a Guyana Olympic solidarity scholarship holder and prospect he has expressed his desire to qualify for the Paris 2023 Olympics and expressed his intention of ramping up his training and competition schedule in his quest to achieve this set goal,” the release added.
The GTTA detailed the playing system will see seven individual events with the singles division being played best of seven games.
The number of seeded players and main draw, are defined according to the number of entries, at the final entries’ deadline.
According to the ITTF website, the GTTA has registered four players Britton, Christopher Franklin, Chelsea Edghill and Natalie Cummings for the tournament.
The ranking list which will be used for seeding and for the draws shall be the ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking published on 28 September.
