Woman gets fine, community service after ganja-in-soap bust at Lusignan Prison

A young woman who was caught while attempting to smuggle cannabis into the Lusignan Prison in a bag of soaps was on Tuesday fined and ordered to do community service.

Monique Caesar, 20, of Sophia, appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court, where she pleaded guilty to the two charges brought against her.

She was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and seeking to introduce a prohibited article into the prison.

Caesar was fined $13,200 and ordered to perform six months of community service for the narcotics charge and fined $26,000 or in default one month in imprisonment for the charge of seeking to place a prohibited article in the prison.

This newspaper previously reported that she was caught attempting to smuggle a quantity of cannabis hidden in blue soap into the Lusignan Prison. She was arrested on Monday at around 12.39 hrs at the facility, where she had gone to take items for an inmate, a Guyana Police Force (GPF) statement said.

A search was conducted on a bag she was carrying with a quantity of blue soap. “Upon examination of the soap, eight plastic parcels with of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found,” the police said.

The parcels of cannabis amounted to 22 grammes.
