Guard charged with theft of $400,000 ring

A security guard was on Wednesday released on bail after he denied stealing a $400,000 ring from a car that was at a wash bay.

Akeem Coates, 29, of Lot 61 Water Street, Georgetown, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown, where the charge was read to him. It is alleged that on October 28, at Water Street, Georgetown, he stole a gold and diamond ring, valued $400,000, which was the property of Mario Moonsammy.

Police Prosecutor Gillian Simmons told the court that Moonsammy went to the wash bay at Water Street, where Coates lives, to have his car washed. After the vehicle was washed, he left for work and after arriving at work, he checked his gym bag, where he had the ring and discovered that it was missing. He then returned to the wash bay and saw Coates, whom she said was running. He then made a report of the alleged theft and Coates was arrested.

Coates pleaded not guilty and was released on $25,000 bail. The matter is due to be called again on November 29.
