Kieron Pollard has made his position clear that he has no intention of stepping down as West Indies captain or ending his international career at this point.
Pollard is currently leading West Indies in the T20 World Cup but with three loses in four matches, their hopes of defending their title has come to an end.
During an interview after their loss to Sri Lanka on Thursday, the skipper said, “Unless you are part of the decision that is going to get rid of me or fire me or retire me as I stand right now, I have no intentions of not playing international cricket.”
“Personally, I don’t set personal goals for personal glory, I play cricket to win cricket matches each and every time and we came to a World Cup to win and we have not done that,” he added.
The 34-year-old all-rounder reckoned that he still has a lot in the tank but was cognizant of precedents where persons have been axed abruptly.
He stated, “One tournament or a couple bad games don’t make a summer and for me personally there are a lot of milage in my legs as an individual there are a lot of people in different scenarios who make decisions and I can’t make that decision but we have a tendency when things go badly the easiest things to do, we look for things to blame and chop and change and we accept them and I accept it and take it on the chin, sometimes you have to absorb the pressure before you apply.”
From a personal standpoint, the captain opined that within the last two years he has not performed poorly while noting, “two or three games are not going to detour Kieron Pollard, I’m sorry.”
Since assuming captaincy in 2019, Pollard has played 30 T20I matches where has won 10 matches and lost 15.
His batting average of 30.64 as captain sees an improvement from 21.5 during the period when he was not captain while his strike rate of 156.92 since given the leadership role is one of the most dominant in the T20I circuit.
