On Friday, the Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Department commenced its probe of an accident that occurred on Thursday at the F&R Supermarket, Stelling Road, Vreed-En Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD) that led to the death of a 22-year-old porter/labourer, Sudesh Charran.
A release from the Ministry said that Senior OSH Officer Maxean Bess, visited and investigated the accident site, and thus far it has been revealed that Charran of Lot 3964 West Minister, West Bank Demerara (WBD) was employed with Mohamed Zakir at the F&R Supermarket for over four years.
According to Raffiek Khan, the company’s driver, at approximately 4:05 pm on the day of the accident, he transported a variety of goods via minibus GZZ 3362 to the supermarket, and Charran was told to offload them.
He further stated that he told Charran not to walk under the lift and then ventured inside the supermarket. While inside the supermarket, he heard a loud noise and when he looked, the metal lifter was on the deceased. According to the ministry statement, he shouted for help and employees and members of the public ran to his assistance in an attempt to remove the lifter from Charran’s lifeless body.
The investigation is expected to continue.
