FFTP distributes 400 Flood relief support packages to Region Two communities

Food For the Poor Guyana Inc (FFTP) in collaboration with the Region Two Regional Democratic Council (RDC) Friday afternoon distributed 400 flood-relief support packages to several Amerindian communities that were recently affected by the flooding. The flooding occurred between the period of April and August 2021 and many households in the various communities were affected.

According to Senior Project Officer, Ms. Andrea Benjamin, FFTP has been in communication with Regional Officials in the Region, and names of persons were provided by the Officials of the communities that were predominantly affected by the recent heavy rainfall. 

“Food For The Poor (Guyana) Inc. has been working with the Regional Chairwoman Ms. Vilma De Silva and her team to provide support to the families and communities affected by the flooding,” Benjamin said. 

Benjamin said that one of the mandate of Food For the Poor Guyana Inc (FFTP) is to provide hope, security for families ensuring that those with children grow in a comfortable environment and they are provided with the basic housing amenities. Benjamin said that FFTP Guyana Inc will continue to provide assistance where needed to help bring relief to vulnerable groups. 

The eight communities that received packages included communities in both Upper and Lower Pomeroon as well as on the Coastland. The communities included Akawini, Siriki Sands, Lower Akawini, Friendship Back-lands, St. John’s, St. Monica/Karawab, Masha-bo, and Bethany. The Flood Relief Support Packages included One(1) Collapsible 5 gallon jar,  Two mosquito nets, 50 water treatment tablets,  Five (5) reusable cloth masks. Each community received 25 packages.

Toshoa of Bethany Sonia Latchman said that she is very satisfied with the packages. She said residents were severely affected and it will go a far way in helping persons. Most of the Toshoas expressed gratitude to Food For the Poor Guyana Inc for their continuous support. 

Deputy Toshoa of Mashabo Fazil Boodhoo said that his community was affected by the recent flooding and he is happy for the assistance. The distribution was held at the Queenstown community center.
