Since the PPP/C Government took office in August 2020, close to 9,000 house lots have been distributed across the country.
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal made this disclosure on Friday while stating that at the time, there were 70,000 pending applications.
The majority of the backlog, Croal said falls within the low-income bracket and the persons come from Region Four.
The prices for low income house lots vary. However, Croal said they could be as low as $92,000.
The delivery of house lots was among the PPP/C’s promises during the 2020 elections campaign. The Irfaan Ali-led government is aiming to deliver 50,000 house lots at the end of five years.
The Ministry of Housing and Water has distributed hundreds of house lots through its ‘Dream Realised’ housing drive.
According to Croal, the Government is on target to deliver on its commitment.
“We have allocated close to 9,000 allocations since August 2020….We are on target to achieving our overall housing programme…This is a five-year implementation as part of our manifesto commitment,” he said.
The numbers, Croal said also include persons who would have benefitted from the Ministry’s housing programme.
“When we say 50,000, that’s in terms of the lots. But when we also have our housing programme, those persons who benefit from our housing programme and even persons who are dealt with in a regularization manner, have to go through that process. They have to go through our system so they will be in our database. Those numbers also form part of the numbers that we are dealing with,” he explained.
Croal added that there are citizens who are still to acquire their house lots and are now embarking on the process after seeing the Ministry’s successes.
He revealed that the ministry has received about 13,000 new applications from August 2020 to now.
In the New Year, Croal said hundreds more house lots are expected to be distributed.
