Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony yesterday reported that Region Three (West Demerara- Essequibo Islands) currently has the highest number of active cases in the country.
He made this revelation during his daily COVID-19 update where he noted that Region Three is the only Region where the active cases are currently over 1,000.
“When we look at the regional distribution of these cases we now see that Region Three is the area that has the highest amount of cases so we now have 1,100 cases in Region Three,” he said.
To this end, he noted that while hotspots have been identified in that region, in Region Four which was previously the region that had the most active cases, a decrease in cases has been reported. He added that the active cases in Region Four, with a much larger population, currently stand at 934.
In Region Three there are a number of communities that are hotspots like Tuschen, Parfaite Harmonie, Klien Pouderoyen and Crane with over 50 cases each while areas like Parika, Cornelia Ida, Vreed-en- Hoop and Zeelugt currently have over 40 cases each.
Anthony added that Hague, Leonora and Westminster have over 30 cases each while Anna Catherina, Canal No. 2, La Grange, Good Fortuin, Stewartville and Sisters village all have over 20 active cases.
“So as you can see most of the villages in Region Three we are seeing relatively high numbers of cases and clusters of cases,” the health minister noted.
He said that another area of concern happens to be Region Ten where authorities have seen a rise in cases. He said that there are now about 175 cases in the region. Specifically, Anthony said they are concerned about Wismar which has 72 cases, Amelia’s Ward with 33 active cases and Mackenzie with 19 cases.
He said, “Why we have to be very concerned here is because most of the population in Linden and in Region Ten as a whole the vaccination uptake there has been quite low so if you have cases, those cases can easily spread to others and therefore you would see more people getting infected.”
Meanwhile, the minister stated that there are only a few areas of concern in Region Four like Diamond and Grove on the East Bank of Demerara which currently have 39 and 44 active cases respectively. He added that areas on the East Coast of Demerara that are affected by COVID-19 all have less than 20 active cases each.
In Georgetown Anthony stated that there are a number of cases in Kitty (36), Sophia (34), Campbellville (26) and Cummings Lodge with 22. The health minister stated that these are areas where clusters have been observed.
