Police are on the hunt for two bandits who stormed Johnny P Shopping Centre in South Ruimveldt early yesterday morning and carted off an undisclosed amount of cash and other items.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) in a press statement confirmed the robbery which took place around 8.30am at a Western Union office situated in the supermarket.
The suspects, one of whom was armed with a handgun, relieved two cashiers of a HP laptop, one gold ring and an undisclosed sum of cash.
The police said that enquiries disclosed that the cashier exited the Western Union office and went to the front of the supermarket to assist a disabled customer to conduct a transaction, leaving the door open.
Upon his return, he was confronted by the armed suspect, who held him at gunpoint.
The police added that the suspect ordered the cashier to hand over all the valuables and he complied.
He was then ordered to lie on the ground. “The suspect then exited the Western Union office through a wooden door to the supermarket, where he joined the company of another suspect who was awaiting,” the police statement explained.
The bandits escaped east of Aubrey Barker Road, South Ruimveldt on an XR motorcycle which was parked in front of the Supermarket.
An alarm was raised and the police were summoned.
