The Georgetown Cricket Association is gearing up to resume competitions on November 20, according to chairman of the competitions committee, Shaun Massiah.
In a correspondence to this publication on Wednesday, Massiah noted that it was after the competitions committee meeting on Tuesday night that the decision was made to restart cricket in the capital.
However, the resumption is subject to the weather and Massiah explained that the administration will try its best to get as many matches in as possible owing to the rainy season.
“Once we get the weather, we will strive to have youth cricket playing because the selectors will need to see them and the players will need to have some matches under their belt to get themselves prepared for a possible selection in the Guyana team and maybe even further,” Massiah explained.
When asked about the significance of the resumption he responded, “It is more than significant because we have lost nearly two years pertaining to age group cricket and we are seeing that Cricket West Indies has put out a tentative schedule to restart age group cricket and if we don’t resume now, we will be in a difficult position to select players.”
The competitions chairman pointed out that the body has received approval from the COVID-19 task force with the same guidelines which include that players must be fully vaccinated or provide a negative PCR test. This information has been relayed to the respective clubs.
Also, clubs are asked to submit their updated list of registered players to him before November 17, 2021. In the GISE/Star Party Rental/Trophy Stall 1st division two-day tournament Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) is leading Group ‘A’ while Everest is leading Group ‘B’.
In the Noble House Seafood 2nd division two-day tournament, GCC leads Group ‘A’ and Demerara Cricket Club leads Group ‘B’. In the limited overs tournaments, the New Building Society 2nd division 40-over tournament sees GCC leading Group A and DCC leading Group B.
