Members of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Elections Accreditation Committee were up to last night working to complete the verification of nominees for the post of leader and executive members of the party.
“The team is working into this evening (last night) to complete the process. So by tomorrow (today) we should be issuing a statement,” executive member of the PNCR, Christopher Jones told Stabroek News yesterday in an invited comment.
Sources had previously told Stabroek News that counting of the nominations received had been completed but there is a process of verification to determine if the persons submitting or nominated are active members.
One source close to the process had related that preliminary results show that for the position of Leader of the party, Aubrey Norton has received the most nominations, but the source was tightlipped about candidates for other positions.
The PNCR Congress is scheduled to take place on December 11th and voting for the nominees will occur then.
Friday’s Nomination Day proceedings confirmed that incumbent leader and former President David Granger will not be running for another term. Granger is also on leave from the party.
Norton and the other main contenders, Opposition Leader, Joseph Harmon and former PNC Health Minister Dr Richard Van West-Charles declared that win or lose, they will unite in the opposition’s fight against the PPP/C government.
They, however, differed on if that person should also be Opposition Leader.
Analysts say that were Norton to win the leadership that would spell the end of Harmon’s tenure as Opposition Leader.
