Guyanese national basketball players and former Plaisance Guardians duo Akeem Crandon and Israel Yaw propelled ASA College of New York to an 83-73 victory over Dutchess Community College in their season opener.
The duo who are currently on athletic scholarships, combined for 39 points and 17 rebounds in the win. Yaw amassed a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds while Crandon chipped in with 18 points, seven rebounds.
National head-coach and Plaisance Guardians tactician Junior Hercules in an invited comment said, “Both Akeem Crandon and Israel Yaw benefited and were exposed to senior-level training and competition by virtue of having access to the national coach and GABF Senior training programme. Their performance at ASA College and recent achievements come as no surprise to me.”
He further said, “Exposure, opportunities, and long-term commitment are what is lacking largely for athletes’ development within Guyana Basketball Culture. It is my hope that future scholarship initiatives and opportunities can be afforded through foundations like the Foundation Hope Organization.”
Crandon is pursuing an associate degree in Health Information Medical Records Technology, while Yaw is studying for an associate degree in Business Administration.
