Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton has warned that stricter penalties are coming for those employers who breach the labour laws.
On November 11th, at the ministry’s sensitization seminar for security firms, Hamilton stated that companies continue to break the laws because the penalties seem worthless. However, the ministry is working on stricter penalties and more substantial fines, a Ministry of Labour press release said.
Employers who refuse to comply with the laws will be placed before the court and the name of the business, its principals and directors will be issued in press releases, Hamilton warned.
The minister added that along with workers’ rights, workers’ safety should be discussed as well. Having a safe and adequate environment should be top priority and not just the wages and salaries.
He noted that new labour officers and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) officers were hired and have been adequately distributed to all regions to resolve labour-related issues.
