Twenty-year-old Daniel McArthur, a security officer, was on Monday jailed for a robbery committed on Thursday last on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD). He was sentenced to four years six months imprisonment.
McArthur, of Lot 22 South Vryheid’s Lust, ECD, was slapped with five charges, which include committing robbery under arms on Hardatt Munshai, and two counts each of unlawful possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
Appearing before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, McArthur pleaded guilty to three charges which include the robbery under arms and the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
On the two other charges of possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, McArthur pleaded not guilty. The hearing on these matters will continue on December 5.
Earlier this year, McArthur was freed of one of the robbery charges pending against him after the virtual complainant was compensated for the articles stolen from her. It was reported that on April 29, at North Road, Georgetown, McArthur stole two gold chains, valued $224,000, from Janetta Morris.
According to the prosecutor, the woman was in a bus when McArthur walked up to the vehicle, grabbed her chains and escaped. He was reportedly chased by the conductor and was apprehended. The woman then positively identified him.
During a previous hearing, McArthur pleaded not guilty and was placed on bail. He was also ordered to stay 100 feet away from Morris, her residence and her workplace. At another hearing the court heard that Morris and McArthur had come to a decision for him to compensate her with $200,000 in order for the charge to be dismissed.
McArthur was also charged in May for armed robbery committed on Stephon Daphness, 24, of Lot 86 Hill Street, Charlestown, Georgetown.
