Guyanese national basketball players and former Plaisance Guardians combination, Akeem Crandon and Israel Yaw, assisted ASA College of New York to a hard-fought 70-65 win over the University of Connecticut at Avery Point on Tuesday.
It was the second win in as many matches for the Guyanese duo, following their team’s 83-73 victory over Dutchess Community College in the season opener. Combining for 39 points in their previous outing, the East Coast Demerara pair combined for 22 points and 20 rebounds in Groton, Connecticut.
Crandon bagged a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Yaw amassed eight points and seven rebounds.Former national head-coach, Junior Hercules, who had served as their tactician at the club level, opined that the current performance of the duo bodes well for the future. He added that the duo possess contrasting talents which were displayed early in their fledging careers.
“The trajectory of both Akeem and Israel in the current college environment coupled with their personal ambition will auger well for their careers. Akeem has always demonstrated the ability to put up a ‘double-double’, as evident in this second game. While with Israel, his upside and ability to dominate was always present especially in the areas of shot blocking, rebounding, and point scoring.”
The Avengers will continue their season today against Essex CC at the Infinity Arena.
