A new water supply system was commissioned on Wednesday in Kamarang, Region Seven and over 700 persons are expected to benefit from a potable water supply for the first time.
The system was installed by the Guyana Water Inc (GWI), with the well, being 150 meters in depth.
According to a GWI press release, along with the new system, 3000 meters of 50mm pipelines were installed and distributed to networks of over 2,400 meters of 19mm lines for service connections of 25 individual public buildings and stand pipes in the area.
The system, which cost a sum of GY$45 million, also included a well pump, photovoltaic system, construction of elevated storage and installation of four 450 gallon storage tanks.
Minister of Housing and Water Collin Croal, who commissioned the system, noted that drilling of another well has commenced in Jawalla. Both wells will see a 70% of potable water coverage in Region Seven.
Residents of the area previously depended on water from the rain and the Kamarang River, which has become polluted due to mining activities.
Ramchand Jailal, GWI’s Hinterland Services Manager, told residents that the system belongs to them and they should take good care of it. He also stated that GWI has trained Community Service Operators in the area to maintain the system and give weekly report.
Lemmel Thomas, Kamarang\Warwatta Toshao, thanked the government and GWI for the water supply and noted that community has been without potable water for two decades.
Managing Director of contractor R. Kissoon Contracting Service was also at the ceremony in which he thanked the residents for their support during the execution of the system and provided sports gear to the Community Sports Club.
