Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn today again invoked his concern that the country was facing a “trial by fire” as a large section of a building in the Eve Leary Police complex was gutted by blaze just weeks after the main Brickdam station was consumed in an inferno.
There is so far no word about cause of today’s fire which destroyed the part of the building where some police ranks are housed along with the Police Office of Professional Responsibility.
Speaking to reporters at the scene, Benn said that it appears that a “subliminal” message being circulated in the country and started by a “pyrotechnic-minded” person in the US may be and more than likely behind the incidents and the timings of these fires.
He said one of these messages was that “Georgetown will bun if the PPP don’t do whatever”.
Benn vowed that the government would “stand firm” against any destabilization and would ensure works continue in line with the development agenda. He said all of the relevant services will have to be more vigilant.
Commissioner of Police (ag) Nigel Hoppie told reporters that the first fire call was received just after 1 pm.
He said that all files from the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which had come under threat from the fire, had successfully been removed.
Hoppie said contingencies are in place to deal with any police files that might have been obliterated in the fire. A large number of files were also lost in the Brickdam blaze.
