After being cancelled for the past two years due to the pandemic, The Aliann Pompey Invitational (API), Guyana’s annual athletics showpiece is set to make its return next year at the National Track and Field Centre, in Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
The breaking news was announced yesterday by the USA-based founder, Aliann Pompey. “Today we are happy to announce that the next edition of the API is scheduled for June 18, 2022.”
According to the four-time Olympian, “All of our previous sponsors and supporters have already committed to the event. We look forward to welcoming the fans and the international as well as local athletes to the Leonora Stadium.”
In its inaugural staging, the API enabled 11 athletes, all from overseas, to qualify for Olympic Games in Rio. It was therefore the hope of the event’s organisers to once again be seen as a conduit to the Tokyo Olympic Games this past summer but regrettably it had to be cancelled.
