Seventeen-year-old Parmesh Ramgobin of Charity, one of Region Two’s top performers at the recent CSEC examinations and who sold chips to make his way through school is now one step closer to achieving his dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon.
Ramgobin had obtained 15 grade ones and 5 grade twos at one sitting at the Anna Regina Multilateral Secondary School.
Leading up to the examinations, the Charity youth endured many challenges which compelled him to sell chips as a way of earning an income.
Ramgobin had related that due to the fact that he lived in Charity it was very expensive for him to travel to Anna Regina as well as to attend classes. His father’s income was meagre and as such he had to find other means of paying for his tuition fees. He then resorted to frying chips and supplying nearby shops.
When Stabroek News published a story on him, members of the public offered support. The Managing Director of Mohamed’s Enterprise Nazar Mohamed met with the young man and pledged his backing.
Mohamed, who is also an Essequibian, was moved by the young man’s story and reached out to him. In a simple presentation ceremony, Mohamed promised to assist the teenager during his academic life.
Mohamed also took the teenager to meet with the Minister of Public Service Sonia Parag who granted the youth a scholarship to the University of Guyana. He is currently doing a two-year Biology Programme and then he will be switching to Medicine.
“After receiving such generous donations I have started pursuing an Associate Degree in Natural Sciences and after that I’ll be starting medical school, my focus now is acing all my courses so I can become the best version of myself”, Ramgobin told Stabroek News.
He thanked all those persons who reached out to him by offering words of encouragement and congratulations.
