Dear Editor,
Only a few days after the international community praises Guyana, images appeared in the media showing adults and children who seemed to be starving, whilst the government claimed that they were malnourished. Clearly, those affected are in Guyana for quite some time, and it’s very hurtful and embarrassing to know that a country that supposedly is the fastest developing country has a situation like this. Were the images leaked to the media prompting them to vastly appear concerned? There isn’t a day the media is not publishing pictures of the Government and their officials going to various parts of Guyana on some PR stunt, which causes me to ask, how come they missed that area? Members of the Opposition continuously say that the government is only looking after their supporters. Is that the case here, and that’s why they weren’t aware of the seriousness there?
Editor, the Government constantly boasts of measurements being in place to help migrants, and nothing is affecting Guyana economically that could say migrants cannot be assisted. There should be a proper investigation into this sickening and embarrassing affair and whosoever is found being negligent should be dealt with accordingly. What happened to the Village Captains, or whosesoever responsible for that region? Weren’t they aware of what is going on, and did they report same to anyone? They must find out where the breakdown in communication occurred, if that’s the case. Indeed many factors exist presently. Is it that those who have the powers to help are reluctant because they are migrants? Is it a political situation where there’s bickering and the people have to suffer? We always see friends, family, or associates being given power and position and not performing their duties. Was the help for them diverted to the villagers instead? There are too many questions about this embarrassing situation and appropriate action should be taken to avoid any re-occurrence.
Sincerely,
Sahadeo Bates
