Guyana’s confident boxing outfit is en route to Cali, Colombia with the aim of returning with hardware from the inaugural Junior Pan American Games scheduled to start Thursday and conclude on December 5.
The four-member team of Travis Inverary, Alesha Jackman and Patrick Harvey, boxers, along with Coach, Terrence Poole ,was scheduled to depart at midnight and according to Poole, “We can get podium finishes.”
Poole told this publication on Sunday during the last gym session of the trio that “They just need to transfer what they have done during the camp into the ring.”
The pugilists were under the watchful eyes of Poole’s fellow AIBA Three Star Coach, Sebert Blake in the run to the event and Blake also mentioned similar sentiments.
“They have shown a lot of ability and fitness and if they are able to put out their best performances, they all have the ability to medal. It is just to go out there and execute.”
In a first, the trio was afforded the services of a personal trainer, a psychologist, a nutritionist and a physiotherapist and Blake envisions his charges “Going out there and doing their best.”
Jackman and Inverary will compete in the 69kg class, while Harvey will do combat in the 63kg division.
The first Junior Pan Am Games is an international multi-sport event for athletes aged 17 to 22 in the Americas where 315 events in 28 sports are scheduled to be contested. Guyana will be represented in seven disciplines.
