Guyana is expected to receive more doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine next month, according to Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony.
This was disclosed during his daily COVID-19 update yesterday where he stated that the authorities are working to procure more vaccines. Guyana has thus far received a total of 246,870 doses of the Pfizer vaccine through a donation from the United States.
During yesterday’s update, the health minister informed that the authorities are expecting another set of Pfizer for adults in early December while other vaccines are set to arrive here in the first quarter of next year including AstraZeneca, Johnson & Johnson, and more Pfizer jabs.
When asked about the procurement of the Pfizer vaccines for children ages 5 to 11, he responded that the authorities are working to acquire those. “We’re working to get that specific formulation but right now that formulation is primarily in the US so once it becomes available we will certainly try to get it.”
The health ministry recently announced that there would be a delay in the rollout of the vaccination programme for children within that age cohort as it was unable to procure the specific formulation of Pfizer vaccines for children. Initially the ministry had stated that it would be using one third of the adult dosage to administer to children between ages 5 to 11. Several letter writers to this newspaper had protested this plan
