Several residents in the Amerindian community of Bethany in Region Two are now equipped with the knowledge of boat building compliments of the Ministry of Labour’s Board of Industrial Training (BIT).
A total of eleven persons comprising 9 females and 2 males successfully completed the boat-building project and received certificates.
The boat-building project was birthed after residents made the request during a recent cabinet outreach.
During the training, participants were required to do practical sessions which saw them construct a twenty-one- foot speed boat. In addition, the community received a 75-horse power outboard engine from the Ministry of Labour.
Expressing gratitude to the ministry for keeping their promise to the residents of Bethany was Toshao Sonia Latchman. She said the boat and engine will be used to transport medical supplies and also transport patients from the community. It will also be used to monitor logging operations and transport councillors from the villages in the Supenaam Creek to the coastland. The toshao said she was glad that the trainees were given certificates that could be used for future employment.
“I must say I am very happy the initiative came at an opportune time and it did not just deliver the skills needed in boat building but the village got a boat and engine, a boat that was built from scratch from its residents,” Latchman said.
