The section of Merriman Mall where fruits and vegetables are sold was yesterday cleaned up in a campaign spearheaded by the City Council’s Solid Waste Department.
The “cleanup campaign” was led by Solid Waste Director, Walter Narine, and his team, assisted by vendors and staff of the City Council and follows a report in this newspaper of the dreadful state of the area.
When Stabroek News spoke with Narine, he informed that the exercise began around 8:30 yesterday morning. Tractors brought skip bins for the garbage to be put into and disposed of at the approved dumpsites.
Narine disclosed that cleaning of the Mall will occur every three months.
A notice sent to the vendors on Wednesday, 24th November from the director, called for them to evacuate the area yesterday in order to accommodate the cleaning of the mall.
He also noted that the other side of the Merriman Mall is also targeted for cleaning, but that will not
happen right now since the department has a tightly packed schedule.
An article published by this newspaper last Wednesday, stated that the director had pronounced that after the cleanup, anyone, especially vendors, found littering the area would be suspended from the mall.
