Guyana’s table tennis players yesterday crashed out of the singles and doubles events of the inaugural Junior Pan Am Games in Cali, Colombia.
Top player Miguel Wong lost in the round of 32 last night after receiving a bye in the first round while Jonathan Van Lange lost in the round of 64 yesterday morning.
Wong lost to Elias Lopez of Paraguay 1-4. He had dropped the first two sets 6-11 and 10-12 before winning the third set 11-8.
However Lopez closed out the match by winning the next two sets 11-7 and 11-5.
Earlier Van Lange lost 0-4 to Cuba’s Rene Vinajera. Scores in that match were 5-11, 10-12, 8-11, and 7-11.
In the men’s doubles, Van Lange and Wong lost 1-3 to Alejandro Sanchez and Elias Lopez of Paraguay 11-9, 5-11, 8-11, 8-11.
In boxing Guyana’s three member team of Travis Inverary, Alesha Jackman and Patrick Harvey all lost their quarter-final round encounters by 0-5 margins.
Inverary lost to Yeferson Ramos 0-5 in a 69kg men’s bout, Jackman lost 0-5 to Roxana Flores in a women’s 69kg bout and Harvey lost 0-5 to William Rivera in a 63kg men’s bout.
In swimming Guyana’s Aleka Persaud placed first in heat one of the women’s 100m freestyle event with a time of 1.01.11 while her teammate placed sixth in 1.04.85.
In the women’s butterfly 100m event Persaud placed eighth clocking 1.10.86s.
Patrice Mahaica also competed in the women’s 50m freestyle event clocking 29.96s placing eighth.
Leon Seaton and Paul Mahaica both competed in the 100m men’s freestyle event clocking 54.42s and 59.08s for second and eighth place respectively.
In athletics Nolex Holder clocked 10.68s in the men’s 100m for fifth place. Chantoba Bright was scheduled to be in action last night in the women’s long jump event.
In weightlifting Guyana’s Esther Nurse placed ninth in the 76kg women’s event.
