Why is it suggested that Indians who do not delve into Hinduism are culturally lost?

Dear Editor,

I would like to thank Dr. Vishnu Bisram for his letter “It was a critique of Cheddi Jagan naivete” (SN, 1st December 2021) in which the gentleman seems to be inadvertently suggesting that those of us Indians who do not delve into Hinduism, are culturally lost. Bisram intoned that I need to somehow prove I am better off with my beliefs than I would be as a practising Hindu. For clarification, I was never Hindu. I have always been a Christian. I am not a convert from Hinduism. How exactly is Bisram quantifying what my beliefs provides? Is it material wealth? Is it power? Is it fame? Is it spiritual wellbeing? Is it increased knowledge, wisdom and understanding?

Sincerely,

Sean Ori
