It is time we have the best of the best to occupy the highest office of this land

Dear Editor,

There is no doubt every Guyanese welcomes electoral-reform. It is hoped there will be wide consultations of all stake holders. In fact, any reform that doesn’t enjoy full participation of the wider populace is considered dictatorial. I hope to hear more from the ‘Champions of Democracy’. I am not sure how I can have my views considered, but I decided to pen my thoughts. My concern is who becomes president of our country in the near future. Our present system of any person nominated by the respective parties can become president is badly flawed and given our racial divide, I don’t believe it allows us to have the best, and the most suitably qualified, person for the highest office of this land. I do not wish to comment on our past presidents, except to say, we must do better. I believe there must be minimum qualification and experience requirements to fit the task of leading our country. It is my view that such individual should be between ages 55years and 70 years old. The person must have integrity and free of criminal record. The person must be free of any racist accusation and has the ability to be a true national leader, regardless of race, religion or party. It is time Guyana have a win-win president who all Guyanese can work with after any election is over. It is time we have the best of the best to occupy the highest office of this land. Let us make Guyana a true nation of One People, One Nation with One Destiny.

Sincerely,

C. Woolford
