Four Guyanese nationals were detained in Barbados last week for drug trafficking after being found aboard a vessel that was reportedly being used to transport marijuana to the island.
According to the Barbados Today news site, a joint counter-narcotics operation on November 24 resulted in the arrest of four Guyanese nationals and one Barbadian, along with the boat which was allegedly being used to transport the marijuana to Barbados.
The interception took place in Barbados’ territorial waters.
Acting Lieutenant Commander of the Barbados Coast Guard, Derek Brathwaite, was reported as saying that the Royal Barbados Police Force, the Barbados Coast Guard and other agencies participated in the joint counter-narcotics operation off the coast of Barbados, resulting in the seizure of contraband, the detention of the five individuals and the vessel.
Barbados police have since taken over the investigation.
